Introduction and Background of the Organization
Tesfa social and development association (TSDA) is a legally Registered non-for profit and non-governmental Iddir based Organization established in September 23, 2000 in response to the needs of HIV/AIDS affected and infected individuals, families and vulnerable groups. Currently it is working With 50 Iddirs having greater than 6000 member on different Development issues to contribute to mitigation of HIV/AIDS pandemic and poverty alleviation in the country.
TSDA’s program activities and services, which were limited to Kolfe Keranio subcity of Addis Ababa –During its formative years, are now spread to Oromia region creating new branches in burayue, Holeta and Seyu towns.
The association is devoted to improve the lives of impoverished elderly citizens, orphans and vulnerable children and marginalized women/youth by designing and implementing participatory projects that can arrest the spread of HIV/AIDS, and facilitate income and employment generation opportunities.
Major Program Areas
1.Coordinated care and support for orphans and vulnerable children developed by PC3 program, TSDA provides more than six services components for OVC namely provision of food items, shelter, educational support, health and nutrition, psychosocial support, and life skill training
2.TSDA contributes to the reduction of HIV/AIDS by directly supporting the bed ridden patients through home based care providers (HCB) and distribution of free ART drugs, awareness raising program, facilitated by trained community conversation facilitators and peer educators to the community. TSDA provides VCT services to the needy. It also provides support to Anti-HIV/AIDS clubs and supporting the PLHIV through income generating activities.
3. TSDA is working towards reducing the vulnerability of elderly. The support scheme includes shelter maintenance, provision of clothing, blankets and bed sheets, entertainment center, saving and credit service. It also provides BDS and IGA trainings for those who are capable of engaging in income generating activities.
4. Facilitate the economic development of low-income families so that, they can be able to support themselves. Accordingly provision of credit and saving services, various IGA and BDS trainings are some of the services given to these groups. Pity trades/small businesses and urban agriculture activities are some of the activities by which the beneficiaries have engaged in.
5. Building the capacity of Iddirs and the community in the area of HIV/AIDS control and prevention with community conversation and peer education, facilitation of networking and partnership with different local, government and nongovernmental organizations, trainings on project proposal writing skills, leadership, livelihood (BDS/IGA) are the major ones.
